(2022) Marquis Hayes - Guard - Oklahoma

6'4

318 lbs

Senior

Write-Up:

Marquis Hayes is an average sized guard who was a Redshirt Senior at Oklahoma in 2021. A 3 year starter, Hayes has the size and potential ability to succeed at the next level, though is a bit of a project. He excels at taking on single blitzers head on in both pass and run protection, though he definitely excels more in the run game as a very physical presence who is good at turning defenders and creating run lanes. He is a good pass protector who can hold a single block for up to 5 seconds most times. When not faced with an immediate assignment, Hayes is quite proficient at finding somebody to block, either down the field or helping chip/double team pass rushers.

However, his athleticism does hold him back sometimes, specifically as a pulling guard in outside run schemes, as he struggles to get out fast enough to meet defenders in time. He also tends to struggle against disguised blitzes and needs to work on his play recognition somewhat.

Overall, Hayes is an okay athlete who excels in standard run and pass sets, but needs to develop against complex blitzing schemes. While Hayes is not a day one NFL starter, I believe he has the potential to become one down the line.

  • Good at chipping, finding a block even if he doesn’t have a direct block ahead of him.

  • Very physical, good at finishing/pancaking if he win his initial matchup

  • Strong in the run game, at least straight on.

  • Very handsy, sometimes too much and will take holding calls.

  • Can be leveraged to the inside.

  • Not the fastest when pulling in run blocking.

  • Struggles sometimes on disguised blitzes

  • Very willing to move down the field with the run, seeks out blocks.

  • Lots of hurry-up used in the Oklahoma offense, but Hayes never left the field often and had little to no loss of conditioning
