(2022) Tyquan Thornton - Wide Receiver - Baylor

 6’3

182 lbs

Senior

Write-Up:

Tyquan Thornton is a lanky wide receiver out of Baylor who is an intriguing developmental player at the NFL level. At 6’3, 182 lbs, he offers a long, wiry frame that is both a strength and a detriment to his game. Thornton lined up mainly on the outside at Baylor, but also oftentimes in the slot. The Bears were mainly a run-first offense, which limited Thornton’s opportunities, as well as their QB not having the strongest or most accurate arm. When Thornton was utilized in the receiving game, he displayed a good amount of speed and catching ability. In one on one coverage, Thornton has the ability to win off the line and use his speed to outpace defenders down the field. He is able to high-point the football well while maintaining body control even despite his light frame. He has a large catch radius and can fight through some contact to make a reception, and is dependable in making the catch most times.

While his route running ability is not bad, he struggles to create separation on routes that require more than just speed. Because of his frame, he can be shoved off his route if played physically enough at the line, which can neutralize some of his speed. Thornton will rarely make defenders miss when he has the ball in his hands. He is an average run blocker, and does put forth the effort to make the block, but his size will see him struggle against much stronger NFL defenders.

Overall, Tyquan Thornton is a developmental player coming out of the Draft. He may struggle initially with his smaller frame against much tougher and bigger NFL defenders, and needs to work on his route running ability to create more space off the line of scrimmage. Despite the concerns, Thornton does have an intriguing enough skill set in his speed and dependable catching ability to potentially stick at the next level within the proper scheme.
