Write-Up:

Andre Carter II is in prime position to be the first player selected out of Army since 2008, and the highest selected since the 1940s. He was incredibly productive in 2021, but saw a steep decline in 2022. He missed 2 games this season, but has been fairly durable in his career. Carter is fairly new to the defensive end of the ball, having come out of HS as a WR/TE. At Army, he mainly saw action as a wide 7 or 9 tech, almost always in an upright, 2-point stance. He was asked to drop into coverage at times, where he was decent.

Carter II is one of the most intriguing prospects in the 2023 NFL Draft. For starters, his size profile is extremely desirable, at 6’7 and 260 lbs. He has extremely long arms that provide a huge reach advantage against most opposing blockers. His best plays come as a pass rusher. Army deployed him largely as a wide 7/9 technique which allowed him to utilize his burst off the line and lateral quickness. He has an incredible twitchiness to his game that makes him somewhat unpredictable in his pass rushes. He has the speed and agility to work around the edge and is bendy enough to work around blockers. Carter’s speed makes him very dangerous in pursuit of the ball carrier, and his high effort always puts him around the ball.

Despite all of the athleticism, there is a lot that Carter needs to polish and work on in order to reach his full potential at the next level. His overall play recognition does need to improve. He can get fooled by play-action/option plays and often works himself too far upfield on running plays. As a pass rusher, Carter also struggles to diagnose blocking schemes and techniques. This is not helped by his overall lack of a pass rush arsenal. He focuses much more on winning with his speed and lateral quickness than hand fighting and power, which is odd considering his extreme length. Despite having first contact with most blockers, Carter really fails to use it to his advantage more often than not.

Overall, Andre Carter II is a very enticing developmental prospect at the next level. He certainly has the athletic profile and build to become incredibly successful in the NFL, but needs quite a bit of development to get there. Still, the upside to become a premier pass rusher is absolutely there, and a team confident in their ability to develop him could take a shot on him early.
