Write-Up:

Derrick Hall is a very productive senior edge player from Auburn. He has not missed a game since his 2020 sophomore season. He mainly lined up at 3-4 OLB, mainly as a 5 tech, but did see some action as an ILB. He occasionally dropped into coverage to varying success.

Hall is an extremely athletic and long pass rusher who has the foundation to become a successful every down player at the next level. He possesses an elite burst off the LOS and great speed to get around offensive tackles. He also has a variety of pass rush moves at his disposal, but they do need some polish to truly be successful. He certainly has a power aspect to his game, but can get knocked down/off target if opposing blockers can get to him. He lacks the “bendiness” to truly get around the edge without completely blowing by the tackle. Hall is a good run defender thanks to his length, but is not instinctually there at all times in the run game. He does miss tackles at times. If he does have to drop into coverage, his zone ability is not very good, though his length and athleticism can help him out in this aspect.

Overall Derick Hall has all the tools and athletic ability to become a great pass rusher at the NFL level, but there are plenty of aspects to his game that need polishing up if he wants to reach that potential.

POSITIVES:

Derick Hall is a great athlete and has an elite build, specifically his 35’ arms, that project to a lot of pass rush success. He generally uses these tools to his advantage, as a great outside rusher with tons of speed. He can move back to the inside of the blocker with a variety of pass rushing moves, including clubs, rips, swims and one-arm stabs. He has a power element to his rushing ability and can knock off blockers who do not have a steady base. His length is an asset in run defense, even if he does not always place himself in the right gaps. His speed allows him to be great in pursuit of the ball carrier, and he is not afraid to lay a big hit on a ball carrier if he has the opportunity to.

NEGATIVES:

Hall’s main knock as a pass rusher is his lack of bendiness. Even when he can win to the outside with his speed and burst, Hall can still get knocked away if the tackle get enough of him to knock him off balance. He can be a little stiff in his rushes and can be pushed around by stronger, stable blockers. His run defense instincts need some polish to succeed at the next level. Hall occasionally misses tackles, which is concerning for somebody with his length and agility. He can take plays off, especially in the run game. When he does drop into coverage, his instincts are not great and can lead to lapses in zone coverage.

Draft Projection: Round 2-3 Talent
