Write-Up:

Myles Murphy is a top edge rushing prospect out of Clemson, where he was a 3 year starter. He has missed no time at Clemson with any injuries. Murphy lined up largely as a 5 tech defensive end, with a bit of 4i and 7 tech alignment used as well. He was asked to drop into coverage at times, and was generally poor in his abilities.

There are plenty of good things to like about Myles Murphy. First off, he has an NFL-ready frame at around 6’5, 275 lbs and has the arm length to boot. He has elite get-off from his stance at the snap; impressive for somebody his size. This allows him to utilize a variety of pass rush moves, his most successful being a dip/rip, and a powerful one arm stab to create space to the outside edge. Murphy is quite bendy and fluid, and this allows him to attack both the interior and outside edge of blockers. This carries over to the run game, where he can be an effective edge setter, and especially fantastic at splitting between blockers to get into the backfield. It is almost a common occurrence to see Murphy in the backfield disrupting the play, even if he does not necessarily make the tackle.

That being said, Murphy does disappoint in some aspects of his game. Despite his elite early burst, he can play fairly slow at times; which is seemingly at odds with his athletic testing. This may have to do with him playing too tall at times, which can leave him flat-footed against agile ball carriers. Murphy is generally a secure tackler, but can be juked out and misdirected.

Overall, Myles Murphy has the build and traits to be an elite pass rusher in the NFL. His elite get-off and ability to slip and bend through blockers should translate to an immediate role as a defensive end at the next level. There are some aspects to clean up though, and it will be interesting to see what his final testing numbers come out to be. Murphy is a fairly safe bet to go early in the 2023 Draft, and I don’t think a team will be disappointed in what they get.
