Write-Up:

Tyree Wilson is a senior pass rusher from Texas Tech who has been a full-time starter the past two seasons. He mainly lined up as a 5-tech or 3-tech as a Red Raider, and was asked to drop into coverage a few times, to middling success.

Wilson’s main draw as a prospect is his frame and length. He is listed at 6’6, 275 lbs and has extremely long arms that he relies on as a pass rusher. His arms allow him to almost always get first contact between him and the blocker, where he possesses the power to knock them off balance and create leverage. Wilson almost always wins as a pass rusher by using his reach and power advantage to create space. Wilson does have some good burst off the line of scrimmage, however he very rarely uses it to go around the edge blocker. He has incredibly strong hands. In the run game, Wilson can create plenty of havoc in the backfield by pushing away blockers, and using his length to close off run gaps. He has enough power and balance to bounce off oncoming run blockers with ease. He is a violent tackler and his length really allows him to make more tackles despite not being in the best positions at times.

While the power element of his game is absolutely there, the film does demonstrate a lack of speed from Wilson. While his burst off the line is usually good, there are times where he can be late and put him at a big disadvantage. He can be fairly predictable in his pass rush attacks in this way, and well-prepared outside blockers may be able to successfully work around his reach advantage.

Overall, Tyree Wilson is one of the most high-upside prospects in this years’ NFL Draft. His length and power ability combine to create a big problem for opposing blockers to handle, and he can be a menace in the run game as well. The lack of speed on tape at times is a concern, and he could benefit from a more diverse pass rush arsenal. But in general, Tyree Wilson should be one of the first edge rushers off the board thanks to his sky-high potential.
