Write-Up:
Zach Harrison is a true senior, edge player from Ohio State who has played in almost all of the Buckeyes’ games the past two seasons. He almost always lined up as a defensive end as either a 5-tech or 4i, though there are a few moments where he did move more towards the interior of the line. He occasionally dropped into coverage, where he was fairly solid and able to defend well on shorter swing and out routes.
Harrison has always been a player people have expected more out of and finally in his senior season he seems to have made at least somewhat of a jump in his play. His athleticism does show up on tape, especially for someone of his size and stature. He possesses extremely strong and quick hands and is a threat of power rushing to the inside or bouncing his rush to the outside. While he does play fairly stiff at times, he can outspeed blockers around the edge and his long arms make him a threat to reach the QB. Harrison is a solid run defender and can use his burst and power to quickly clog up run gaps and is a very secure tackler when the ball carrier arrives. He also can drop into coverage if need be, and does display some strong cover ability in the short passing game, however he can be exposed if he has to carry anybody up the field.
His overall play speed and ability is inconsistent at times though; sometimes his burst is evident and he is the first person off the line, and other times he is far behind. Sometimes he makes great moves inside to clog the run lane, while others he is easily pushed outside and out of the play. Any sort of added blocking to his side, such as a chip blocker, double team or pulling guard can really throw Harrison off, and can usually neutralize him entirely from a play.
Overall, Zach Harrison has shown improvement in every aspect at his game while at Ohio State. He is a good athlete with a long frame that can display some incredible power and explosiveness at times, and this applies to him as both a pass rusher and a run defender. However, while his motor is not in question, his play can be very inconsistent at times. It will be very interesting to see his testing numbers at the NFL Combine/Pro Day, as a team could very easily become enamored with the raw talent on display.
