Write-Up:
Caleb Murphy is a record-setting pass rusher who played at Ferris State, a D2 program. He transferred in from Grand Valley State(D2) and won back to back D2 National Titles with the Ferris State Bulldogs. Alongside the hardware, Murphy set the all-time NCAA single-season sack record this season with 25.5 sacks. (Terrell Suggs set it with 24.5 sacks in 2002). He also broke the D2 single season sack record. (set by Matthew Judon with 20.5)
This report will be brief due to a lack of tape, but there’s enough out there to get a general feel for the player. Obviously the production numbers jump off the page, but I was a bit underwhelmed with Murphy overall. Starting with the good, Murphy stands out on the field with his NFL-ready frame. He certainly won’t look out of place at the next level. Murphy either relies on his speed to get to the outside or uses a bull rush with good power to push his way right to the QB. While his athleticism is not off the charts when compared to other edge rushers in this class, there is enough there to work with. However, a lot of development needs to happen for him to get there. He does not have very many pass rush moves at his disposal and his bull rush may not work as well against much stronger tackles at the next level. Despite Murphy having good acceleration, he often is late off the snap; his timing seems very off at times.
Overall, I am very curious to see Caleb Murphy perform at this year’s Shrine Bowl, and get a better look at him against some higher competition. He obviously dominated the D2 level, but I unfortunately have my doubts when he moves up. Still, there is an intriguing amount of athleticism that may be enough to have a team take a shot on him in the Draft.
Draft Projection: Late Day 3-UDFA
