Write-Up:

YaYa Diaby is a larger edge rusher out of Louisville, who put up a fairly strong 2022 season in terms of sack production. Diaby began his college career at Georgia Military College (JUCO) before becoming a highly recruited JUCO transfer. Diaby ended up choosing to play the rest of his college ball at Louisville, where he has played the last 3 seasons, 2 of them as a starter. However, his statistics coming into this season were extremely low, before having a very productive 2022 with 10 sacks.

Diaby certainly has some positive traits that he puts on display that should draw some NFL interest. He has the size profile of a successful edge rusher/ defensive end at the next level, and has the athletic traits to back that up. He has good downhill speed and has some power behind his rushing attack. Diaby does have a few pass rush moves at his disposal, but only sporadically utilizes them to their full extent. As a Cardinal, Diaby lined up at multiple positions across the defensive line, so he could provide some versatility and flexibility to wherever he ends up landing.

Unfortunately, there’s a lot more issues with Diaby’s game as of now than positives. His snap timing is very inconsistent, and that can limit how effective his speed rushes can be, despite his aptitude at it. He lacks an arsenal of counter moves if his initial rush is stymied. In general, he lacks the bendiness and flexibility that many successful edge rushers possess. He is almost exclusively a downhill rusher. Despite being fairly secure early in his career, Diaby’s tackling rate tanked this season and it showed on tape. He overextends himself often and seemingly doesn’t have the length to make up for it. In general, he is a poor run defender.

Overall, YaYa Diaby is a fun, but extremely limited pass rusher at the moment, with a ton to clean up if he is to find a long-term role in the NFL. He has the athleticism to improve a ton, but considering his age and how much needs to improve, it may be too much to overcome. I could see him finding a role on special teams or rotational pass rusher, especially if his tackling can rebound.
